237. Caleb son of Jephunneh: He followed the Lord wholeheartedly.

Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah.

Joshua 15
13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)

Numbers 14
24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.


Caleb was chosen leader of the tribe of Judah during the time of Moses (Numbers 34:18).

Caleb, along with Joshua, was among the 12 spies sent by Moses to explore Canaan (Numbers 13) after the Israelites had been in the wilderness for 2 years.

The other 10 spies gave a bad report about Canaan which angered the Lord (Numbers 14:36-38). Hence the Israelites continued to be in the wilderness for another 38 years, come to the time Caleb and Joshua were the only ones left alive of the 12 spies, and Joshua became the leader of the Israelites after Moses death; Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan.

Judah (translated "This time I will praise the Lord") was one of the sons of Jacob (Genesis 29:35); the Lord changed the name of Jacob to Israel (Genesis 32:28).

Judah committed a serious sin, he had a son with his daughter-in-law Tamar, who was named Perez (Genesis 38).

The Lord redeemed the name of Judah.

Perez was to be forefather of David the King of Israel.

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.

Before David became King of Israel, he was anointed king over the tribe of Judah (2 Samuel 2:4).

Perez would then be the forefather of Jesus the Messiah.

Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.


Revelation 5
5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

The Lord redeemed Judah.
