213. A father carries his son: The Lord has compassion on His children.

As a father carries his son.

Deuteronomy 1

29 Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. 

30 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 

31 and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

Psalm 103

13 As a father has compassion on his children,

    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.

The word "compassion" (along with the words "grace" and "mercy") is mentioned many times in the New Testament.

Let us look at these three words in the Old Testament, in the following sequence, grace, mercy, and compassion.

But when grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and do not regard the majesty of the Lord. Isaiah 26:10

"The first thing we should understand about this is that this quality of God being absolutely sovereign in mercy and compassion is part of His inmost nature. 

This is one of God's names. This is clear from Exodus 34:5-7 (“The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”)

The words after "The Lord, The Lord," translated compassion and gracious—are the same Hebrews words of our text. They proclaim God's name.

God's being absolutely sovereign in mercy and compassion is connected to the greatness and glory of God.

Who is like our God? Beyond our understanding. Greater than we can conceive. Sovereign in mercy and compassion. Praise Him."

Years back, I cried out to the Lord and He had compassion on me.

I was bankrupt, I had no stable job hence no money for the college education of my children.

The Lord is compassionate, he bankrolled me with about a million pesos, my two daughters attended college at an exclusive school on free tuition.

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,

    for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

    great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

The Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.

""As a father has compassion on his children,

    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

for he knows how we are formed,

    he remembers that we are dust.

The life of mortals is like grass,

    they flourish like a flower of the field;

the wind blows over it and it is gone,

    and its place remembers it no more.

But from everlasting to everlasting

    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,

    and his righteousness with their children’s children—

with those who keep his covenant

    and remember to obey his precepts.

Praise the Lord, my soul;

    all my inmost being, praise his holy name." (Psalms 103:13-18, 1). This I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
