Leviticus 11
44 “I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.
45 I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.”
1 Peter 1
15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Holy. We would normally refer to someone we call a saint as holy.
In 1 Peter 1, "the first word of this epistle, Peter, identifies the author, who called himself “an apostle of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:1). He wrote this letter to a group of Christians scattered throughout the northern areas of Asia Minor, where he may have previously preached the gospel." The life of Apostle Peter should we say is a story of disappointment, he denied the Lord Jesus on the night before the Lord's crucifixion. To us, this was unexpected.
Among the disciples, Peter was in the inner circle of the Lord Jesus, along with James and John.
Matthew 17
1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Peter would not let the Lord Jesus get arrested.
John 18
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
And then Peter denied the Lord Jesus three times. John 18:17, 25, 27
After the death of the Lord Jesus, Peter must have been disappointed with himself and was deciding to just go back to his fishing trade. John 21:3
Then the Risen Lord appeared to Peter and the other disciples.
John 21
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
There the Lord Jesus restored Peter. As Peter earlier denied the Lord Jesus three times, the Lord asked Peter three times if he loves Him. John 21:15-17
Then the Lord Jesus said to Peter, "Follow me!" (John 21:19). The Lord Jesus restored Peter, he went to be a leader of the first century church.
In the words of Apostle Peter, "I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it." 1 Peter 5:12
And his encouragement to us.
2 Peter 3
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.
18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
From the life of Apostle Peter, to be holy is to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
"In its most basic sense, a saint is a “holy one,” someone who is set apart for God’s special purposes. As a result, every follower of Jesus Christ is a saint." From https://www.christianitywebsite/jesus/following-jesus/repentance-faith-and-salvation/what-does-saint-mean.html
""My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever. The LORD is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them" (Psalm 145:21, 17, 9, 14, 3, 19). "In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you" (Psalm 33:21-22). This I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
15 January 2018"
May you be blessed with God's Word.
Maraming salamat.
