“Be still.” Exodus 14:14b

Exodus 14
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.
14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.
Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.”
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided,
and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. Exodus 14:15-16, 21-22

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.”
The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived. Exodus 14:26, 28

And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant. Exodus 14:31

The Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him.

Let's rewind. Let's find out if the Israelites trusted the Lord wholeheartedly all along, having seen the mighty hand of God for them to be freed from slavery.

God brought 10 plagues on Egypt when Pharaoh would not let the Hebrews go into the wilderness to worship.

The final plague was the plague of death, where the oldest child or oldest in a litter of cattle and animals was killed. When Pharaoh's oldest son died, he yielded and allowed the exodus.

The Lord passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared them when He struck down the Egyptians. Exodus 12:27

The Lord had seen the misery of His people, the Israelites (Exodus 3:7), and freed them from slavery in Egypt.

In gratitude, the Israelites bowed down and worshiped the Lord.

Was their gratitude and trust in the Lord wholehearted?

The answer is No.

At one point, they said to Moses it would have been better for them to serve the Egyptians when they saw the Pharaoh and his army marching after them.

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord.
They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?
Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” Exodus 14:10-12

If I were among the Israelites at that time, I would surely also be terrified thinking I would be dying in the desert.

Death is our worst fear. We fight our fears. Fear of death comes when we suffer illness.

I fought my fears with my strength, I would tell myself that I will recover from illness because my body is healthy. That was when I was younger. As I grew older, I could not fight my fears with my own strength.

In desperation I cried out to the Lord, for my employer to allow me to go home. I asked the Lord to fight for me against my fear.

I was allowed to go home. I should say, the Lord parted the Red Sea for me to cross to Promised Land.

Home, I would surrender my life to Lord Jesus Christ, I put my faith in Him as my personal Lord and Savior.

I would later start to recover from illness and get gainfully employed, initially locally and later again in another Middle East country.

Psalm 37
Of David.
7a Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him.

"I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
    or their children begging bread.
They are always generous and lend freely;
    their children will be a blessing.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
    your vindication like the noonday sun (Psalm 37:25-26, 3-6). Lord Jesus, You fight for us, we bow down and worship You, with praises and thanksgiving. Amen."

One day my children's children will say, wala ka sa Lolo ko; for him, the Lord will fight for us; we need only to be still.

May you be blessed with God's Word.

Maraming salamat.
