What is conscience?

What is Holy Spirit?

What is the distinction between the two?

Let me share what I wrote 31 August 2017, with additional verses.

“Conscience, sense of right and wrong.

Romans 2
God’s Righteous Judgment
14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.
15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Triune God or the Holy Trinity.

Romans 2
The Jews and the Law
28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.
29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.

The Holy Spirit is grieved when we sin.

I would remember the time during Bible study, our Dear Pastor Clem Guillermo (http://pcf.org.ph/) asked what is Holy Spirit and what is conscience.

Sirit na. He explained the Holy Spirit dwells in a person who is Christian, and conscience is in everyone else.

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23).

“Lord, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to be with us. As You said,  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17.) Lord, lead me that I bear fruit of the Spirit; blessed be Your name, in Jesus’ name. Amen.””

From Wikipedia.
Conscience is a cognitive process that elicits emotion and rational associations based on an individual's moral philosophy or value system. Conscience stands in contrast to elicited emotion or thought due to associations based on immediate sensory perceptions and reflexive responses, as in sympathetic central nervous system responses. In common terms, conscience is often described as leading to feelings of remorse when a person commits an act that conflicts with their moral values.

For the majority of Christian denominations, the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost, is the third person of the Trinity, the Triune God manifested as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each entity itself being God.
In the New Testament it is identified with the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Truth, the Paraclete and the Holy Spirit.

By the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. (from above verse Romans 2:29)

Regarding the above portrait of the Good Samaritan, in the parable, the first to come by the half dead victim of the robbers was a priest, and then a Levite. It was a Samaritan, from a people looked down on by the Jews, who took pity on him.

The Samaritan was not taught the written code, it was in his heart.

The Holy Spirit is distinctive of Christianity.

Most often regarded as the symbol of Christianity is the cross, while the dove is for the Holy Spirit.

John 3
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior in 2004 at age 44.

One day, my children's children will say, wala ka sa Lolo ko; for him, it’s not a matter of conscience, it’s the leading of the Holy Spirit.

May you be blessed.

Maraming salamat.
